3 snowy craft ideas for winter in Windsor

Winter has officially arrived in Windsor! A blizzard hit the region earlier this week, blanketing the city in layers of snow. If you’re looking for some activities to match our newly-snowy world, say no more: here are three crafts that are perfect matches for our wintry weather!

DIY Ice Ornaments

You will need:
→Baking mold or bowl
→Found objects (e.g., twigs, leaves, branches)
→Rope or strong string
→Optional: small berries and/or seeds (e.g., pomegranate seeds, cranberries, bird seeds, sunflower seeds)

How to make your ornament:
→Fill your baking mold/bowl with water.
→Place the two ends of your rope/string in the water. Make sure that the ends are fully submerged.
→Find your natural materials — look for things like twigs, leaves, or branches that have fallen in your backyard or neighbourhood. Get creative! When you have your natural materials, add them to the water.
→Place your mold/bowl outside to freeze overnight. When you wake up, you will have your very own ice ornament, ready to hang and enjoy!

Marshmallow Snow People

You will need:
→Two large marshmallows
→Candy corn OR smarties OR M&Ms (for nose)
→Icing
→Graham cracker or cookie
→Small pretzel sticks (for arms)
→Chocolate chips (for eyes and buttons)
→Chocolate icing (for mouth)
→Mint (for hat)
→Licorice or fruit roll-up (for scarf)
→Optional: toothpicks for added stability

How to make your snow person:
→Spread the icing onto a plate, and secure the graham cracker/cookie to the plate. Stack your two marshmallows on top of the graham cracker using the icing.
→Secure the eyes, nose, and buttons to the snowperson either by pushing them into the marshmallows, or using the icing to glue them on. Remember to add the mouth using the chocolate icing!
→Stick the snowperson’s mint hat onto the top marshmallow.
→Push the pretzel sticks into the bottom marshmallow of the snowperson.
→Tie your licorice or fruit roll-up around the snowperson’s “neck” as a scarf.
→Eat and enjoy — or just enjoy!

Snow Painting

You will need:
→Squeeze bottles
→Food colouring
→Water
→Snow!

How to paint
→Fill the bottles with water. Add several drops of food colouring to make your desired colours.
→Find a snowy canvas in your backyard, and have fun!
→If you don’t have snow where you are, you can always try out this activity using powdered sugar instead of snow.
