Announcing Dante Bresolin as AWE’s third emerging artist in residence
Art Windsor-Essex is excited to announce our third — and final — emerging artist in residence for 2022: Dante Bresolin! From September 1st through November 30th, 2022, Dante will work at AWE creating new works of art, engaging with the public through community projects and planning their offsite solo exhibition at Dry Goods Gallery in Ford City.
Dante Bresolin (they/them) is an emerging multimedia artist based in Windsor, Ontario. A lifelong artist and nature lover, they are self-taught in traditional and digital mediums, as well as photography. They completed a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Biology at the University of Windsor, during which they contributed artwork and held a leadership role for Science Meets Art, a student-led initiative. Their experience in science lends accuracy to their art, which explores science topics and depicts local ecosystems. They’ve created illustrative series about their work in stream ecology and continued to sell prints and stickers during their studies. They hope to continue sharing their artwork with the goal of appreciating and educating about the natural world.
Artist Statement
My art comes from an appreciation for nature, depicting species as they interact with each other and the environment. As a scientist, I want to share my knowledge with others by creating science illustrations of species that are at risk or rarely seen by the public.
My work is heavily influenced by natural history illustrations like that of James Audubon, and the children’s science books I grew up reading. Painters Tiffany Bozic and Teagan White also largely inspire my work. They both depict animals and plants on simple backgrounds, often with whimsical or dark undertones.
While some of my pieces are purely science-inspired, the artistic choices in each piece reflect my thoughts and feelings at the time. For example, one of my ongoing bodies of work, ‘Ephemeral’, uses metaphor to explore stagnation and growth as it applies to the natural world and my lived experiences with mental illness and navigating queer identity.
About the Residency
AWE’s Emerging Artist Residency is a paid opportunity for early-career artists in Windsor-Essex who want to learn, grow, develop, and show their art while engaging with the public in a series of community programs. In addition to creating new works of art in the Education Studio, the artist will create digital content and install an off-site window solo exhibition at the Dry Goods Gallery, at 1012 Drouillard Road, in Ford City.
