Critiquing the AGW Collection: Alex-Andrei Ungurenasu
On April 19th, 2021, Alex-Andrei Ungurenasu was announced as the City of Windsor’s Youth Poet Laureate from 2021–2023. We at The Art Gallery of Windsor want to extend our congratulations to Ungurenasu, and cannot wait to see what they accomplish in their new role.
Today, we’re highlighting Alex-Andrei Ungurenasu’s submission for The Art Gallery of Windsor’s Critique the Collection volume 2, which occurred in January of 2021. Critique the Collection invites community members to engage with The Art Gallery of Windsor by choosing a work from the Gallery’s permanent collection, examining it through a critical lens, and submitting a creative critique in their preferred artistic discipline.

“This painting, Eimi (Ancient Greek for “to be”), is a critique of Wanda Koop’s Sentinel Rust. For me, Sentinel Rust sparks questions of identity through its use of lines and shapes in relation to the silhouette. Since some of the lines seem to be in the foreground in the original, I decided to experiment with magnifying and placing them in the background. I used green and gold because they best express my personal identity. By putting the two paintings next to each other, I hope to better understand the questions which form in Sentinel Rust and further develop in Eimi.”
Alex-Andrei Ungurenasu is a Romanian-Canadian poet and artist. Their interests include visual poetry, modernist literature, and existentialist philosophy.
