Join us in celebrating why we love museums!
Compiled by Abbey Lee Hallett, Audience Engagement Coordinator at The Art Gallery of Windsor
This past Wednesday — March 24th, 2021 — was “Why I Love Museums” Day. Hoping to garner some excitement, I reached out to our team at the Art Gallery of Windsor to see if they would be interested in sharing some of their favoured museum experiences. I assumed I would receive a couple of responses, but instead, I received several beautiful sentiments that spoke to the wonderment, awe, and inspiration that museums can bring.
Please join us in celebrating the many reasons why we love museums, and feel free to share your own in the comments section below!
Sophie Hinch, Education & Public Programs Coordinator
“I love museums because they teach me something new about myself and about the world around me. They challenge me and take me out of my comfort zone. I can experience and engage with new works of art, installations, and objects. Museums bring history to life!”
Alice Welsh, Gallery Guide & Educator
“When I first came face to face with a work of art that I had only read about and seen its reproductions, I was spellbound. A lifelong love of art finally crystallized in front of me. Seeing the Lawren Harris paintings in the permanent collection, and the Impressionist works that were on loan at the AGW a few years ago did this for me. No one should miss a chance to have this experience.”
Amanda Dupuis, Gallery Guide & Educator
“One awesome thing about being in a museum/gallery space is that you can experience some amazing artwork up close!!”
Micaela Muldoon, Digital Initiatives Coordinator
“I love museums because they continue to make history even as they protect its memory. They shape the future by reminding us of the past and making sure it’s always relevant to and talked about in the present.”
Deb Remekie, Volunteer
“I love museums because they give me an opportunity to pretend I own what I’m viewing!”
Kristina Bradt, Preparator and Gallery Guide
“I love museums because they allow me to time travel and see the world from someone else’s point of view. Everything to me holds a narrative, idea or story that is part of being human. I love museums and galleries because they challenge me to think bigger and open my mind to know that the sky is the limit.”
And me — Abbey Lee Hallett, Audience Engagement Coordinator
“I love museums because they are an incredible intersection of wonder, learning, and curiosity. In a museum, you can get transported into an immersive world, and learn in a way that is unencumbered by grades or exams!”
