The AWE Teen Arts Council is a group of teens aged 14–17 from across Windsor-Essex who have come together to create programs for teens, by teens. This year, the council will:

  • Connect with other teen artists and art enthusiasts in the region
  • Meet artists and creators at AWE and beyond
  • Plan and attend creative workshops and events
  • Get involved with volunteer opportunities at AWE

Meet our five first Teen Arts Council members!

Ashley Bi, Grade 12, Vincent Massey Secondary School

In 1 sentence, why did you want to join the teen arts council? To meet new people with the same interest!

Who is your artistic inspiration and why? It’s been a long time now, but my cousin was the one who instilled in me a love of art. Back when we lived together, she would often draw pretty characters and cut them out for me so that I could play with them like dolls!

What are some of your favourite hobbies? Drawing is definitely my favourite among favourites, but gaming, playing piano, and playing volleyball are up there as well.

Abigail Weaver, Grade 11 at Vincent Massey Secondary School

What are your favourite artistic mediums? Some of my favourite artistic mediums are pencils, pens and watercolour.

What are some of your favourite hobbies? Some of my favourite hobbies are reading, writing and drawing.

What are some of your favourite spaces or places? Some of my favourite places are my bedroom and by water!

Divya Kumar, grade 12, Vincent Massey Secondary School

What are you most excited to do or learn while on the teen council? While I’m on the teen council, I’m most excited about being able to be more involved with the local art community! AWE has already provided me with many opportunities to work alongside some amazing local artists! I look forward to organizing and participating in more events the community can engage in.

What are your favourite artistic mediums? I mainly like to use markers and coloured pencils for art, but I’ve started learning how to use Procreate!

What are some of your favourite hobbies? Outside of art, I enjoy baking, going on walks with my cat, and outdoor activities like camping and hiking!

Elle Reid, grade 12, North Star High School

In 1 sentence, why did you want to join the teen arts council? I wanted to join the teen art council to learn more about the AWE and how it works. I also wanted to be more involved in the local art community.

Who is your artistic inspiration and why? My artistic inspiration is my dad, Rich Reid and my art mentor, Sanja Srdanov. They inspire me to continue to explore my photography skills and other art mediums father and in new creative ways.

What are your favourite artistic mediums? My favourite artistic mediums are photography, painting with oil paints, and drawing in mostly marker and I’m a music enthusiast. My favourite way to express my artistic forms is through abstract styles.

Florie Matthews, grade 9, Walkerville Secondary School

In 1 sentence, why did you want to join the teen arts council? I want to get more involved with the art community, to work with people who share my interests, learn some new things and create ideas that the community can enjoy and maybe benefit from.

What are you most excited to do or learn while on the teen council? A few things: I’m looking forward to getting to know my fellow council members, as well as gaining experience and producing fun and exciting ideas to try out.

What are your favourite artistic mediums? For the most part, I draw and doodle. I also like painting (watercolour, for the most part), doing photography, with the occasional printmaking, and stop-motion filming. I have also tried some sewing!

We would like to thank Lisa and Brian Schwab for their generous support of the AWE Teen Arts Council!
