Give your wellness a boost with a visit to AWE!
Seven Types of Rest, by Simone Orlando, AWE intern
Did you know that visiting Art Windsor-Essex can be an important part of your personal and social wellness? According to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, M.D., the author of Sacred Rest, there are seven types of rest we should practice maintaining good mental, physical and social health.
Dalton-Smith says that we need Physical, Mental, Sensory, Emotional, Social, Creative, and Spiritual Rest.
How much rest can you get at Art Windsor-Essex? Spending time at the gallery can help you relax in several ways that support your wellbeing. AWE combines activities that benefit your body and mind, leading to feeling recharged, renewed and better able to take on life’s challenges.
Creative rest
Awaken your curiosity and learn about new perspectives by taking a self-guided digital tour. Scan a QR code in any gallery space and enjoy the art at your own pace. The calm atmosphere of the gallery and the variety of artworks promote sensory rest and helps you unwind. Let your mind wander as you take in the colours, textures, and stories behind each piece.
Another way to rest at AWE is by participating in hands-on activities in the education studio. Here, visitors can engage in creative projects that stimulate the mind and provide a sense of accomplishment. Making something with your hands allows you to express yourself and channel your emotions into a tangible creation. Whether it’s painting, sculpting, or crafting, the act of creating something can be incredibly therapeutic and fulfilling. Our education studio is open to the public during gallery hours when we aren’t hosting a school group or tour, and the team always has self-directed activities available for visitors.
Social Rest
Sharing your experience with a friend or family member can also be a form of social rest. Either bringing someone along or telling them about your visit afterwards can deepen your connections with others and provide a sense of belonging. It allows you to process your thoughts and emotions, making the experience more meaningful and memorable. AWE’s welcoming atmosphere encourages visitors to engage in conversations and share their perspectives.
Mental Rest
Before or after taking in the exhibitions, grab a seat on the third floor and watch the Detroit Riverfront from a comfortable spot indoors. Once the weather warms, AWE’s patio will be the ultimate place to unwind. Bring a book or just watch the sky and enjoy the breeze on our covered patio. The patio furniture is so inviting we think this should count towards physical rest as well!
