On March 21st, Art Windsor-Essex opened “Waawiiatanong Forever,” an exhibition that celebrates the representation of women and two-spirit folks and their families within our vibrant community.

“Waawiiatanong Forever” is a collaborative Indigenous-led project years in the making, it is a photography and postcard project where community members were invited to present themselves as they wanted to be represented alongside the street signs of Windsor that bear their nation’s name, or photographed at locations that are significant to the community.

“Waawiiatanong Forever” weaves the threads of history, culture, and personal identity. Listen to the voices and stories and get to know more about the Indigenous presence on this land, to be forever celebrated.

Visitors to this exhibition will have the opportunity to take a tour through a digital guide that features recordings of stories as told by the community members featured in the photographs.

This exhibition is on view on the 2nd floor at Art Windsor-Essex from March 21 to September 22, 2024.

Exhibition shot of Elizabeth Zvonar’s “Cracks in the Clockwork”

Also currently on view at AWE, Elizabeth Zvonar’s “Cracks in the Clockwork”.

“Cracks in the Clockwork” presents sculptural and collage works Vancouver-based artist Elizabeth Zvonar alongside artworks and furniture carefully selected from the Art Windsor-Essex collection. Zvonar’s collages, which layer images from fine art catalogues, fashion magazines, and other popular print materials, create new meanings through playful contrasts. The artworks form unexpected relationships between familiar things. Zvonar’s sculptures often show everyday objects — purses, receipts, shoes, gloves — recast with precious materials. Uniting all Zvonar’s work is a sense of exploration and imagination, curiosity and play. Her collage Old Happy is mounted to the façade of Pelissier Street Parking Garage and visible from Ouellette Avenue concurrent to her show at AWE — her first major solo exhibition at a public art gallery in Ontario.

This exhibition is on view on the 2nd floor at Art Windsor-Essex from February 15, to May 26, 2024.
